The G20 summit tales place next Friday and Saturday, but host city Hamburg already feels under siege from protesters. At least 10,000 people marched peacefully through the city on Sunday demanding the gap between rich and poor be closed. Another 30 demonstrations are planned over the next six days.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge in the 21st century and a lot more needs to be done. Even though the United States left the Paris treaty that should not affect it. We have to continue. We owe that to our children and other people,” said one man.
Greenpeace sailed into the port to block a coal shipment, and various vessels went up the river Alster. German police are bracing themselves for more violent protests later in the week from the far-left.
