Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Caracas on Saturday, July 1, to show their support for Venezuela’s chief prosecutor who has challenged President Nicolas Maduro’s plan to rewrite the country’s constitution.
Opposition party MUD organized the rally in the Los Ruices area of Caracas to mark the three month anniversary of anti-government protests and to show solidarity with prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz. Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Thursday barred Diaz from leaving the country and froze her bank accounts.
The Associated Press reported that Ortega Diaz has come under pressure since March when she challenged a Supreme Court ruling dissolving the National Assembly. Ortega Diaz has also pushed for investigations into the use of force by the Venezuelan security forces during anti-government demonstrations that erupted in April. At least 80 have been killed since the start of the most recent protests against Maduro’s government.
