The U.S. and Australia commenced the two nations’ largest-ever joint military exercise Thursday off the coast of northern Australia. 33,000 troops were deployed, on board battleships and aircraft, as well as on land.

A U.S. official says the massive exercise is intended as a show of force as fears of confrontation in the south China Sea have risen.

The exercise will last for a month.
