Planned Parenthood staged a protest inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale at the US Capitol against the Republican-proposed healthcare bill on Tuesday, June 27. The demonstration is part of the People’s Filibuster protest against the bill.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, opted to delay a vote on the bill on Tuesday as opposition built among Republicans. McConnell hoped a vote could be held before the July 4 recess, but it won’t happen now until Congress reconvenes.

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale tells of a world in which women are subjugated, not allowed to work, own property, control money, or read. There is widespread infertility, and the fertile women, called handmaids, are conscripted to bare children for the ruling elite. The book has been turned into a television series on Hulu this year. Similar protests have been held in state capitols. Credit: Twitter/Brynna Quillin via Storyful
