Police Say Faulty Fridge Freezer Started Grenfell Tower Fire and That Cladding Failed Safety Tests

The Metropolitan Police said on June 23 that a faulty fridge freezer was the cause of the deadly Grenfell Tower fire, which left at least 79 people dead or missing.

In a statement issued by Det Chief Supt Fiona McCormack, the Met said that samples of insulation taken from Grenfell Tower started to combust soon after safety checks began, with the cladding also failing safety tests.

As the investigation into the fire continues, McCormack said that police were looking at “every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards”.

McCormack also urged people who were concerned about the immigration status to come forward with information, and said the Home Office would not be informed about anyone’s status as a result. Credit: Metropolitan Police via Storyful
