Burmese pro-democracy activists in New Delhi stage protests against the arrival of Burma's third most powerful man, Army Chief of Staff General Thura Shwe Mann to India. They burnt an effigy of the General while shouting slogans and holding aloft placards at Jantar Mantar. Shwe Mann attended the flagging off, of the India-Burma Friendship Car Rally and held a series of meetings with the Indian Army brass for purchase of more weapons from India. In return Burma assured India it would launch a campaign to flush out India's north-east rebels holed up in his country.
