PARIS — A crazed man who attacked a policeman with a hammer was gunned down by another officer outside the Notre-Dame Cathedral on June 6.
The suspect reportedly yelled “This is for Syria!” when he ran at three officers who were manning the entrance to the church, according to France’s interior minister.
After hitting one of the officers in the head, the BBC reports another officer shot the man in the chest, wounding, but not killing him.
Officials reportedly later found knives and the identity card of an Algerian student believed to be in his 40s on the suspect.
The wounded officer sustained only minor injuries. An estimated 900 people were inside the landmark cathedral at the time of the attack. The church was immediately was put on lockdown as authorities responded to the scene.
