Tens of thousands of Hong Kongers gathered in the city’s Victoria Park on Sunday, June 4, to mark the 28th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Protesters lit candle, sang, and listen to speeches from survivors of the Chinese government crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1989.

The South China Morning Post said that the turnout for the vigil had dipped to the lowest level in nearly a decade as local student union leaders asked members to stay away.

The Hong Kong vigil is the only large-scale commemoration officially sanctioned on Chinese soil.
