Condemning the Afghan blast that killed at least 90 people in capital Kabul's diplomatic centre, the UN underscored that all parties to the conflict are obliged, under international law, to ensure that civilians are protected from any harm. "Those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice," UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric quoted Secretary-General António Guterres as saying on Wednesday (31 May). He also underlined the need to reinforce the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
A bomb, concealed in a water delivery truck, went off during Kabul's rush hour when roads are packed with commuters on 31 May. The blast went off near Zanbaq Square — a highly secure area of the capital that is home to many embassies, diplomatic missions, the Presidential Palace and the Foreign Ministry. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack yet.
