The Syrian army and allied militias advanced in Homs province and captured new areas from Islamic State on May 23, according to the Syrian State News Agency (SANA).

SANA said “dozens” of IS fighters were killed in the military operations, on positions to the east and south of al-Qaryatayn in Homs province.

Opposition media said that the Syrian army had gained substantial territories from IS and now controlled large areas near Palmyra and al-Qaryatayn. Local activist media and militia sources also reported on the advances.
