Jeff Sessions wants prosecutors to toughen up on criminal charges

Attorney General Jeff Sessions wants federal prosecutors to charge suspects with the most serious offense possible. In a memo sent Thursday night, Sessions outlined ways to enforce a stricter policy. First, he says he wants prosecutors to “charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense.” Second, he wants “to disclose to the sentencing courts all facts that impact the sentencing guidelines.” These rules will rollback on the Obama administration’s policy to lessen the penalty on non-violent drug charges. "This policy affirms our responsibility to enforce the law, is moral and just, and produces consistency," Sessions wrote in a memo sent Thursday night to U.S. attorneys and made public early Friday.
