The northwestern German city of Hanover evacuated about 10 percent of its population on Sunday (May 7) to dispose of several unexploded World War II bombs found on a construction site.
Over 50,000 people had to leave their homes for what is believed to be the second-largest bomb disposal operation in postwar Germany, with the previous one taking place on Christmas Day last year in Ausgburg.
Authorities are currently working to remove a total of 13 unexploded bombs, five of which were already located on Saturday (May 6) afternoon in an operation that "kept escalating" over "three weeks," as one resident explained.
The disposal is expected to last until Monday.
