Dramatic footage has emerged from Atlanta, US of people being evacuated from a train after it caught fire.

The video, captured on May 4 by one of the passengers, shows chaotic scenes of people getting out of the train amid a massive cloud of smoke.

''The train stopped in-between mid-town and north avenue station. Suddenly the cart begun to fill with smoke then we could smell something burning,'' the filmer later wrote online.

''A few passengers panicked and started heading to the exit doors to open the door. The doors were not opening at the time. There were a few screams and some people telling others to calm down.''

''There was no announcement to say what was happening and what to do next. We weren't sure if the train was on fire or the tunnel,so we were a bit hesitant to leave cart at the same time the smoke got worse,'' she continued.

''A few passengers opened the emergency door at this point to see if there was any signs of fire in front of the train. Since north avenue station was our closest exit and there were no signs of fire some people decided to come out and walk in the tunnel towards the station.''

''At this point i had no option but to follow suit since staying in the cart was not getting us anywhere. The ending of the video shows some passengers still hesitant to leave the cart as there was no telling where the danger was.''

''I thank God we made it safe to the station. There were fire fighters heading into the tunnel to assist,'' she added.
