With an increasing number of attacks on media persons, the PCI has demanded a legislation that will make physical assaults or intimidation through words or gestures a cognizable offence with stringent punishment. The PCI decision has been taken in the backdrop of concern over recent cases of violence against journalists including the fatal attack on Jagendra Singh in UP and Akshay Singh's death in the Vyapam scam. Among other recommendations of the committee are that in case a journalist is killed, Rs 10 lakh should be paid by the state government to family members while there should be a compensation of Rs 5 lakh in case of grievous injuries.
