A group of kayakers were navigating their way around the Blasket Islands in County Kerry, Ireland, when they spotted a basking shark on April 19. This video shows the moment of the encounter.

Noel O’Leary who recorded the video told the Irish Independent: “They are amazing animals to watch. You see them coming towards you, but you know they are harmless. They duck a few inches to go under the boat. There is no extra movement. You sit still, and they just pop back up the other side.”

Basking sharks are the world’s second-largest fish and can be seen feeding near the Irish coast from April to August.
