All domestic pets, be it dogs, cats, birds or other companions, have wild relatives. Yet, unlike domestic pets, wild animals don't need human owners to care for them.
All the domestic breeds of dogs that we are familiar with, from chihuahuas to pit bulls, are the same species: Canis lupus familiaris.
Our dogs are a subspecies of Canis lupus, or wolf.
