On Thursday morning, President Trump blasted the New York Times for its tweet that included photos appearing to show significantly more New England Patriots in attendance at the Obama’s 2015 Super Bowl winners’ event at the White House than at the one hosted by Trump on Wednesday.
He wrote, “Failing @nytimes, which has been calling me wrong for two years, just got caught in a big lie concerning New England Patriots visit to W.H.”
Trump’s tweet came after the Patriots responded to the Times' tweet, "These photos lack context. Facts: In 2015, over 40 football staff were on the stairs. In 2017, they were seated on the South Lawn."
However, the New England team did confirm to the Times that there were fewer players in 2017 for the visit - 34 showed this time around compared to about 50 in 2015.
In a follow up tweet, the Times noted, "UPDATE: Patriots say # of players was smaller this year than 2015 (34 vs. 50) but total delegation was roughly the same."
