Early this year, news broke that a young maid in Hong Kong was brutally tortured by her employer. The pictures of Erwiana's burned and bruised body went viral, sparking protests and international attention. What is perhaps even more shocking is that, while her case was extreme, it was by no means unique. Many of Hong Kong's over 300,000 foreign domestic workers are underpaid and suffer slave-like treatment at the hands of their (often female) employers. And most of these abuse cases go unreported.
But why is this happening in a wealthy, cosmopolitan city with a reputation for respecting human rights?
Coconuts TV traveled to Hong Kong to find out.
