You love your high-protein, low-carb diet. You swear it makes you more toned and helps your muscles recover faster. Well, a group of Greek scientists from the Aristotelio University of Thessaloniki recently wondered if, in fact, muscle power was lessened with a low-carb, high-protein diet. To find out, they gathered up 10 fit women between the ages of 24 and 40 and had them put it to the test.
What did the study entail?
For the first week, the women were fed what is considered an ordinary diet (15% protein, 55% carbs, and 30% fat). Throughout the week, the women had to participate in intense strength training workouts and their results were measured. The following week, the women were fed a high-protein diet made up of 30% protein, 40% carbs, and 30% fat. Again, the same workouts were completed and the same factors were measured.
What were the results?
They were pretty amazing, actually. The study showed that the women actually had no significant decrease in the amount of weight they were able to lift, or how quickly they got tired, which is great. But beyond that, the women lost more weight during their high-protein week. How? Because the protein caused their oxygen consumption to increase, which helped their hearts work more efficiently, making them burn more calories and fat.
It’s also important to note that there was no reduction in the women’s fluid levels, so anyone who claims low-carb, high-protein dieters only lose water weight is sorely mistaken.
How can I lose weight faster?
As the study shows, the way to successfully reach your weight loss goals quicker is to consume a high-protein, low-carb diet. But how much protein do you need? The participants in the study consumed about 600 calories of protein per day (based on a 2,000 calorie diet).
