Have you heard the little fact that a high-protein diet can help you lose weight? We thought you might have. But did you ever stop to consider that the type of protein you are consuming could actually play a big role in how successful your weight loss endeavours are? Apparently, some scientists at the Teheran University of Medical Sciences wondered the same thing, and since they had the means to do so, they decided to put it to the test.
It turns out that all proteins are not created equal.
More specifically, this study targeted whey protein and soy protein—the two most popular versions used for weight loss. The results are actually a lot more dramatic than you would expect. You would think protein would be protein and it doesn’t matter what the source is, but this study disproves that theory without question.
What exactly did the study entail?
Yes, the details of a study are just as important as the results, so let’s cover those first. In short, there were 52 men who were considered overweight or obese. They were tested for good health and had to confirm that they didn’t use any alcohol, cigarettes, or prescription meds. Then, they were divided into two groups: one received the whey protein and the other was given soy.
But here’s the interesting part: These men were given the protein in addition to their regular meals. They had to consume the appropriate protein beverage 30 minutes before their late afternoon meal. After they had the protein (approximately 60 grams), they were told to just eat what they normally would. However—not surprisingly—both groups ended up experiencing a decreased appetite and, therefore, consumed fewer calories.
So what are the results?
Okay, so both groups enjoyed a protein-packed beverage 30 minutes before their early-evening meal, and they both did so for 12 weeks. But at the end of the 12 weeks, it was the group who consumed the whey protein that experienced the biggest transformation. They reduced their body fat by 9% and their waist circumference by almost 10 centimeters, while the soy group actually showed and increase in both categories (yikes!). The whey group also measured in with an 18% higher muscle mass, and the poor soy group lost some of their all-important muscle mass.
What does this mean for me?
Well, obviously, you should be consuming some of our New Zealand whey protein. And as the study shows, it doesn’t even need to be in place of a meal. Just by adding in a serving of our IsoXp 30 minutes before you eat, you can experience impressive weight loss results—even if you don’t increase your exercise. That’s pretty awesome if you ask us.
