ROME — The former governor of a drug-ravaged Mexican state — who had been on the run since 2012 from both American
and Mexican justice on charges of money laundering and racketeering — has been captured in Italy, officials announced on Monday.
The American warrant for Mr. Yarrington cited charges of racketeering, international drug trafficking, money laundering, bank fraud, tax evasion
and fraud, according to a police statement issued on Monday.
An Italian judge will decide whether to validate Mr. Yarrington’s arrest, and Mr. Rinella said
that both the United States and Mexico had asked for his extradition.
The arrest was confirmed by the office of Mexico’s attorney general, which said it expected Mr. Yarrington to be returned to Mexico.
During the six years that the former governor, Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba, ran the state of Tamaulipas, the Gulf Cartel
and its brutal armed enforcement wing, the Zetas, established their hold over the state.
Mr. Yarrington was wanted on two arrest warrants, one issued by Mexico, the other by the United States.
