Greece's coastguard released on Saturday (April 8) footage from an operation that uncovered an international ring that transported large quantities of drugs from Albania to Italy using high-speed boats.
The coastguard's drug-fighting unit said five Albanians and two Greek had been arrested on Friday (April 7), while two speedboats and 1.5 tonnes of unprocessed cannabis were seized.
Members of the ring - which Greece's coastguard said was estimated to have made "many millions of euros" - were apprehended as they entered Greek waters after leaving packages of cannabis wrapped in plastic on a beach in southern Italy, according to the coast guard.
The months-long investigation, in cooperation with Italy's Guardia di Finanza, found that the ring purchased large volumes of drugs in Albania and transported them on customised high-speed vessels to the shores of Italy.
