Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party won a landslide victory in Saarland’s regional election on Sunday, March 26, as incumbent State Premier Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer secured her seat.
This footage shows Kramp-Karrenbauer, a centrist conservative, addressing her supporters after her victory was announced. The CDU claimed 40.7 percent of the vote, Reuters reported, while rival parties Social Democrats and Linke took 30.4 and 12.4 percent, respectively.
Saarland is Germany’s least populous state, but its elections are seen as an indicator of the possible outcome of September’s federal elections, The Guardian reported.
Far-right party Alternative for Germany took in 6.2 percent of votes.
