Cendrine Marrouat Photography: Delos, Greece

2017-03-24 7

According to Greek mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Apollo (god of daylight) and his twin sister Artemis (goddess of night light). His sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece.

Delos was first settled in the third millennium BC and became a prosperous trading port after 167 BC. But it was attacked and looted twice. Then, it served as a pirate stronghold during Ottoman occupation, before being turned into a quarry site. Its temple columns were burnt and its houses left in ruins.
