A woman who was stranded in a remote part of Grand Canyon for 5 days used her good sense and preparedness to make it out of the perilous situation alive.
24-year-old Amber VanHecke of Texas was out sightseeing in the Arizona desert last week when her GPS sent her to a stretch of rugged road not frequently traveled, reports ABC News.
She then ran out of gas and was unable to get a viable cell phone signal.
WGHP notes that VanHecke survived for 4 days on food and water she’d packed and also made a sign reading, “Please stop. I’m out of gas, stuck here.”
Nobody passed by, so, on day 5, she walked until she was able to make a call to rescuers, but it dropped before she could tell them exactly where she was.
Guided by her description of the area and a note she’d left, Arizona Department of Public Safety air rescue unit found her up the road from where her car had stopped and airlifted her to an area hospital.
VanHecke said of the experience, “I guess I got to cross riding in a helicopter off of my bucket list.”
