Forests cover 30 percent of the planet’s land surface. They filter air and water, absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and harbor upwards of 80 percent of global biodiversity: millions of trees, plants, fungi, and animals—including the 300 million people who live in forests and the 1.6 billion who rely on them for livelihoods and food.
