Born on May 7th 1979 Craig Alton Kirkland spent the best part of his childhood growing up on Featherbed Lane, a small residential district of Spanish Town the one time capital city of Jamaica. More popularly recognized by his pseudonym ‘Amaziyah The Great’, Craig is known both locally and (thanks to social networking) internationally for his contributions to the world of Jamaican Arts by way of his short films, professional photography and music video production.
Craig met with singer Alpha Rowen who introduced him to Sonic Sounds Recording Studios, and it was there he had his first experience of recording in a fully equipped studio. Craig says “the first time Alpha Rowen heard me dee-jaying he was extremely enthusiastic, he told me that he had heard many styles, but none like mine.” Craig found himself motivated by Alpha Rowen’s words and began to perform regularly in and around the community. Not all performances went as well as his school day performances had but Craig undeterred carried on , he says “every artiste gets booed off stage, it's jus a natural ting we entertainers have to experience, it's the phase in music where we, the artistes need to do more homework, delete the errors and come again properly for the people.
Craig defines his alter ego by saying “ It's all about amazement, I do my ting to amaze people, that's where the part AMAZ comes from, I represent myself and YAH from Yahweh/God, so to me it's ‘Amazing One’ motivated by God making Amaziyah The Great.”
Early in 2002 Amaziyah recorded his first track on vinyl, a song titled ‘Ghetto' which he released on his own ‘Great Amazement Entertainment label' the label also featured deejay Saleem “Mr. Webbah” Montague. In 2003 Amaziyah hooked up with Germaine ‘Beast' Ranglin and thru their mutual love and respect of reggae and hip-hop they collaborated on a track entitled ‘Ghetto Voices’. The track proved popular and received some rotation on Jamaica’s mainstream radio stations Irie FM, Hot 102 and Zip 103.The track is still proving to be one of the fans favorites twelve years on it still is getting airplay on stations as far afield as the UK and Africa.
Amaziyah The Great is a versatile musician, a lyrical poet who crosses all genres of music, with carefully constructed verse inspired from his personal experiences growing up in Frazers Content where he still resides today. There is no question that Amaziyah The Great is an accomplished writer who composes songs of caliber in order to bring out the best in himself .
Amaziyah The Great is a budding filmmaker. His short social dramas “Ghetto Visit” (2010) and “Stay Firm” (2011) have won him ‘Honorary Award’ and ‘Audience Popularity’ at the annual Jamaica Reggae Film Festival.
