\r
Saint Valentines Day, commonly known as Valentines Day, is observe on February 14 \r
\r
each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world. \r
\r
St. Valentines Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early \r
\r
Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with \r
\r
Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who \r
\r
were forbidded to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted \r
\r
under the Roman Empire. The day was first associated with romantic love in the \r
\r
circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly \r
\r
love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which \r
\r
lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering \r
\r
confectionery, and sending greeting cards (know as valentines).\r
\r
Todays Google Doodle also celebrates the 154th birthday of George Ferris. George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. (February 14, 1859 – November 22, 1896) was an American engineer. He is mostly famous for creating the original Ferris Wheel for the 1893 Chicago Worlds Columbian Exposition.\r
