\r
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme \r
produced by the BBC.The programme originally ran from 1963 \r
to 1989. It was relaunched in 2005. The programme depicts \r
the adventures of a Time Lord - a time-travelling humanoid \r
alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his \r
TARDIS (acronym: Time and Relative Dimension in Space), a \r
sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as \r
a blue British police box, which was a common sight in \r
Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Along with a \r
succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes \r
while working to save civilizations, help ordinary people, \r
and right wrongs. The character of the Doctor was initially\r
shrouded in mystery. All that was known about him in the \r
programmes early days was that he was an eccentric alien \r
traveler of great intelligence who battled injustice while \r
exploring time and space in an unreliable time machine, the \r
TARDIS. The initially irascible and slightly sinister Doctor quickly mellowed into a more compassionate figure. As a Time Lord, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate his body when near death. Eleven actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show as regeneration. Regeneration is a life process of Time Lords through which the character of the Doctor takes on a new body and, to some extent, new personality, which occurs after sustaining injury which would be fatal to most other species. Although each portrayal of the Doctor is different, and on occasions the various incarnations have even met one another, they are all meant to be aspects of the same character. It was eventually revealed that he had been on the run from his own people, the Time Lords of the planet Gallifrey. \r
\r
The TARDIS (acronym: Time and Relative Dimension in Space) notably appears much larger on the inside than on the outside. It is a quality referred to as dimensionally transcendental. \r
\r
The show has received recognition as one of Britains finest television programmes. It won the 2006 British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series and five consecutive (2005-new) awards at the National Television Awards. The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world and as the most successful science fiction series of all time - based on its over-all broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, and iTunes traffic.\r
