Computer security expert says that people should be wary of flashing peace signs in selfies – as hackers could steal your fingerprints.
Previously, hackers have shown off how ‘fake’ fingerprints can be used to fool the scanners on some popular brands of smartphones.
CNET reports that Isao Echizen, a professor at Japan’s National Institute of Informatics says he could successfully obtain fingerprints from photos taken up to three feet away.
Echizen warns that exposing fingers in a selfie could allow hackers to pair fingerprints with your face – a serious security risk.
His team has created a substance which can stop ‘fingerprint theft’, he says – a titanium oxide-based substance which obscures fingerprints in a shot.
