TURRACH, AUSTRIA — A luxury Austrian hotel was held to ransom in a cyber attack over the weekend.

According to the Local, the hack disabled the electronic lock system at the 4-star Romantik Seehotel Jaegerwirt. The hotel had to pay 1,500 EUR in ransom to unlock their systems.

The hack locked guests out of their rooms, as well as the hotel’s cash desk and reservation system. There were 180 guests booked into the luxury hotel at the time, reported the Local, citing the hotel manager director Christoph Bradstaetter.

Brandstaetter said they had no choice but to pay the ransom because neither the police or insurance company could help them. After they paid, the hotel’s systems returned to normal.

According to the Local, this is the third time the hotel has been hacked. The hackers reportedly tried once more, but failed after the hotel put stronger security measures in place.
