SAGINAW, MICHIGAN— Drug convict Demarlon Thomas spent years fighting for his release, but tragedy struck just months before he was finally going to be free.

M Live reports that around 9:40 p.m. on Monday night, two masked gunmen barged into the Bannum Place federal halfway house in Saginaw, Michigan where Thomas was staying.

CCTV footage released by Michigan State Police shows the men carrying assault-style rifles, and forcing staff to stay put in the front office.

One of the gunmen reportedly rounded up the nearly two dozen residents, while another searched the house for Thomas.

He was eventually found and executed, shot in the head and numerous other places on his body.

Both gunmen quickly fled the house, escaping on foot. They have yet to be identified by authorities.

Thomas, 31, had been in jail for selling cocaine, but was due to be released in March after Obama commuted his 19-year prison sentence.
