Even as India celebrate its 68th Republic Day, here is a look at actors who portrayed freedom fighters on the silver screen.
Aamir Khan as Mangal Pandey
Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who played a key part in events immediately preceding
the outbreak of the first war of Independence in 1857. This national hero’s role was played
by Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan in the film 'The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey' that released in 2005.
Kratika Sengar in Rani Lakshmibai
Rani Lakshmibai was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and a symbol of resistance to British rule in India. This powerful woman was played on TV by Kratika Sengar in the serial ‘Ek Veer Stree ki Kahaani Jhansi Ki Rani’.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Nirmal Sen
Nirmal Sen was a passionate revolutionary. One of Surya Sen’s closest friends, Nirmal had already been sent to jail once prior to the Chittagong attack.
Manoj Bajpai as Masterda Surya Sen
Released in 2012, 'Chittagong' is an Indian historical war drama film. It stars Manoj Bajpai in the lead role and is based upon events that led to the Chittagong uprising. Manoj Bajpai's performance as revolutionary Masterda Surya Sen is noteworthy.
Vishakha Singh as Pritilata Waddedar
The ‘Fukrey’ actress Vishakha Singh played the role of Pritilata Waddedar in the film ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’. Pritilata Waddedar was a freedom fighter and a member of revolutionary group headed by Surya Sen. In 1932, Surya Sen decided to attack the Pahartali European Club that had a sign board that read "Dogs and Indians not allowed". Pritilata along with a 15-man team of revolutionaries led this attack. To avoid getting arrested, Pritilata consumed cyanide and died.
Deepika Padukone as Kalpana Datta
Kalpana Datta was a revolutionary born in Sripur of Chittagong district. She was the member of the Chhatri Sangha. Purnendu Dastidar drew her into the revolutionary circle of Mastarda Surya Sen. Deepika Padukone played this powerful woman on the screen in the film ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’.
Sharman Joshi as Shivaram Rajguru
Hari Rajguru was one of the Indian revolutionaries in freedom struggle. He along with Sukhdev and Bhagat Singh were convicted and hanged in 1931. Sharman Joshi as Rajguru in Rang De Basanti left a lasting impression in viewers’ minds.
Kunal Kapoor as Ashfaqulla Khan
Ashfaqulla Khan was an Indian freedom fighter. He sacrificed his life along with Ram Prasad Bismil. Kunal Kapoor essayed the role of Ashfaqulla Khan onscreen in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Rang De Basanti’.
Sachin Khedekar as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
The iconic portrayal of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was brought on screen by Sachin Khedekar. ‘Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero' released in 2005 and is directed by Shyam Benegal.
Sunny Deol as Chandrashekhar Azad
Chandrashekhar Azad was one of the most glorious freedom fighters in the history of Indian struggle for independence. Azad died at Alfred Park in Allahabad. He kept his pledge to never be captured alive and shot himself dead with his last bullet. Chandrashekhar Azad’s role was played by Bollywood’s powerful actor Sunny Deol in the film '23rd March 1931: Shaheed'.
Bobby Deol as Bhagat Singh
The revolutionary and martyr of Indian freedom struggle Bhagat Singh was portrayed by actor Bobby Deol. The film titled '23rd March 1931: Shaheed' was released in the year 2002 with Bobby Deol in the lead role playing Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
Ajay Devgn as Bhagat Singh
Ajay Devgn won the National award for his portrayal of Bhagat Singh in the film 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film was the story of a young revolutionary Bhagat Singh who raised an armed resistance against the British rule in India.
Sonu Sood as Bhagat Singh
'Shaahed-E-Azam' released in the year 2002. In the same year two other movies on Bhagat Singh were also released named '23rd March 1931: Shaheed' and 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. 'Happy New Year' star Sonu Sood played the protagonist Bhagat Singh in 'Shaahed-E-Azam'.
Naseeruddin Shah as Mahatma Gandhi
Naseeruddin Shah played the role of Mahatma Gandhi in Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram. The film was about the dilemma faced by the would-be assassins of Gandhi in the turmoil of post-partition India.
Paresh Rawal as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
