Although ellagic acid hasn’t yet received a ton of attention from scientists, there are already a number of health benefits that have been research proven … as well as others that are indicated but need more research to be considered definite health benefits of ellagic acid.

So far most of the studies that have been done on ellagic acid have been done on mice or rats up until this point, but human studies are likely to follow soon to further prove the health benefits.

What is Ellagic Acid?

Before we continue, let’s take a minute to define ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a naturally-occurring compound found in several plant-based foods including walnuts, red raspberries, pomegranate and the American muscadine grape. These foods also contain a more complex acid known as ellagitannins, which are converted into ellagic acid in your body.

Ellagic acid works like an antioxidant in your body, removing toxins which can damage your body at the cellular level. It is also converted into urolithins, which are responsible for some of the health benefits of ellagic acid.

Ellagic Acid and Brain Health.

A recent study showed that rats which were given ellagic acid had significantly-reduced the effects of traumatic brain injury including the long-term effects on the hypothalamus and inflammation. Although this study doesn’t cover more broad brain inflammation conditions, it does indicate that there may be additional benefits of ellagic acid on the brain, which could even help improve concentration or help reduce the symptoms of various brain conditions.

Ellagic Acid, Obesity and Inflammation.

One of the causes of obesity is inflammation of the fatty tissues throughout your body. In a 2012 study done on mice, it was shown to reduce the amount of a compound known as resistin. High levels of resistin in the blood have been connected to coronary artery disease as well as diabetes. These high levels are believed to be caused by white blood cells finding their way into fatty tissues, and reducing these levels with ellagic acid – as found in fruits like pomegranate and American muscadine grapes – may help reduce the risks associated with obesity and inflammation.

Ellagic Acid, Diabetes and Glucose Metabolism.

Your body’s ability to metabolize glucose is closely related to weight loss in several ways. When glucose is properly metabolized, you will have plenty of energy throughout the day without experiencing spikes in blood sugar levels that can lead to diabetes or crashes in blood sugar which can lead to carbohydrate cravings and subsequent over-indulgence in extra calories.
