Chicago ends 2016 with highest homicide rate in 2 decades

The past year is going down in history as one of Chicago's most violent years in nearly two decades with 762 homicides. In 2015, the rate of homicides was 485, which was the largest in 60 years. The country's third-largest city also had 1,100 more shootings in 2016 than in 2015, according to Chicago Police Department's statistics report. Four people were already killed and 24 were injured at the start of 2017, according to The Chicago Tribune. Within one year, police recovered more than 8,000 illegal guns, a 20 percent increase from 2015.
