On Friday, Dmitry Medvedev tweeted, “It is regrettable that the Obama administration, which started out by restoring our ties, is ending its term in an anti-Russia agony. RIP.”
The comment comes on the heels of conflict between the two countries stemming from allegations that Russia tried to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
On Thursday, President Obama issued a statement outlining new sanctions against the country as punishment.
Putin has reportedly decided to hold off on any actions until the new administration is in place. He and the incoming U.S. president, Donald Trump, have already shown signs of a warming relationship.
