President-elect Donald Trump has the opportunity to reshape the federal judiciary due to unusually large vacancies in the federal courts. There are currently more than 100 vacancies, including an open seat for U.S. Supreme Court following the death of Judge Antonin Scalia. When President Barack Obama took office eight years ago, there were only 54 vacancies in the federal court. The Republican president will be able to make a number of lifetime appointments.
