President Barack Obama permanently banned offshore oil and gas drilling in large parts of the Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. Canada also said it would follow a similar path and protect its own Arctic Ocean in a joint announcement with Washington. The White House cited concerns over preserving wildlife, ecology, and culture needs. The White House insisted that Obama's decision is permanent under a 1953 law, allowing the president to permanently ban leasing of offshore resources.
