Speaking to The Washington Post on Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said apprehension numbers on the Southwest border have gone down significantly. “Apprehensions are an indicator of total attempts,” Johnson said. “They’ve gone back up again this season but they are a fraction of what they were 15 years ago.” Johnson cited economic factors, investments in border security and changing demographics of migrants for the overall decrease.
