"Woodcutters" by Thomas Bernhard was first published in German language in 1984. It was published in English in 1985.
After its publication, it created a lot of controversy in Austria. Since some Viennese people recognized themselves in the story, the book was banned in Austria. However, its sale was good in the country, and it soon became a bestseller aboard.
