Beit 'Abara is where Jesus was baptized by John the baptist in Matthew 3:13-17. The Jordan River crossing by the children of Israel under Joshua (Joshua 3) happened in this general area. It is also associated with the site where Elijah handed over the prophecy to Elisha and rose to heaven on a fiery chariot (2 Kings 2:6-8, 13-15)
