Over 100 security force members were dispatched for a massive police operation around Montferrier-sur-Lez, near Montpellier on Friday morning, after a masked attacker stormed a Catholic missionaries retirement home killing at least one person on Thursday evening.

The suspect is thought to have broken into the residence, a home for around 70 retired nuns, priests and monks, armed with a knife and a sawn-off shotgun. When police arrived, they found an elderly female warden bound, gagged and stabbed to death outside the building. The assailant had already escaped from the scene.

The identity and the motives of the attacker remain unclear at the time of writing.
