In his last turkey pardon at the White House, President Obama gave a speech that was full of Thanksgiving-related puns.
President Obama added some pun-filled humor to his last official turkey pardon at the White House on Wednesday.
Soon after saying a few words about the tradition, Obama told the audience, “Of course, Thanksgiving is a family holiday as much as a national one, so for the past seven years, I have established another tradition--embarrassing my daughters with a corny-copia of dad jokes about turkeys.”
He then explained that they were not present at the ceremony because “they just couldn’t take my jokes anymore. They were fed up.”
Obama went on to say, “What I haven’t told them yet is that we are going to do this every year from now on. No cameras, just us, every year. No way I’m cutting this habit cold turkey.”
After granting clemency to the two turkeys that were present, he stated, “I want to take a moment to recognize the brave turkeys were won’t so lucky, who didn’t get to ride the gravy train to freedom...and prove that they weren’t chicken.”
He then spoke about issues like job growth and a recovering housing market before saying, in part, “when somebody at your table tells you that you’ve been hoggin’ all the side dishes [and] you can’t have anymore, I hope you respond with the creed that…‘Yes we cran.’”
According to a White House press release, the two pardoned turkeys will reside at Virginia Tech going forward.
