A man in Kentucky was denied a personalized license plate reading ‘IM GOD,’ reports WHAS.
With the help of the state branch of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, he has filed a lawsuit.
According to the BBC, Ben Hart, an atheist who recently moved to Kenton County, Kentucky, said that in the 12 years he had the plate in Ohio, he never had a problem.
However, when he applied to have the words put on his Kentucky vehicle, his request was denied on the grounds the message was, “obscene or vulgar.”
Said Hart, "There is nothing obscene or vulgar about my view that religious beliefs are subject to individual interpretation."
William Sharp, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, noted, “Under the First Amendment, government officials do not have the authority to censor messages simply because they dislike them.”
