When Tatyana was diagnosed, she and her family were devastated. Not only did she have hepatitis C, but the disease had also destroyed her liver. She needed a transplant. It’s a common situation for hepatitis C sufferers, as the disease often goes unnoticed and if left untreated leads to liver failure. Her condition also resulted in other health problems – for instance breathing difficulties.

Tatyana feared her diagnosis would cause people to turn away from her, but instead her family and friends did their utmost to help. One of her sons even offered to become an organ donor. Her youngest son got his friends to help, raising money for the surgery and searching for an organ donor. Her parents and her husband also rallied round. Encouraged by their support, Tatyana travels to Moscow to have her transplant.

Sklifosovsky Institute, aka Sklif: a name known to every Moscovite, and many Russians too. It is Europe's largest research and development facility for emergency medical care, complete with a hospital, research labs, surgery rooms, burn treatment facility and much more. Sklif's Emergency Intensive Care Unit is the clinic's busiest unit, with doctors and nurses tending to those whose lives are hanging by a thread. Here, battles against death are fought every minute of every day. It takes the best to win.
