"Desert of the Heart" by Jane Rule was first published in 1964. When it was published, it was one of the very few novels that talked about lesbianism.
Until 1969, the books that dealt with female homosexuality were considered lesbian pulp fiction. When the book was published, the author was a lecturer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
