The Nigerian president is at the centre of a row after suggesting his wife belongs in the kitchen.

The domestic spat has overshadowed Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Germany, where he and Chancellor Merkel have been trying to tackle migration among other issues.

After Nigeria’s first lady questioned her husband’s political judgement and suggested she might not vote for him in future, the 73-year-old former military ruler delivered a response that has ruffled some feathers.

“I don’t know which party my wife belongs to but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room. It’s not easy to do away with your opposition or people who have not followed you along your campaign trail,” President Buhari told a joint news conference in Berlin, alongside Angela Merkel.

In fact Aisha Buhari did spend time with her husband as he campaigned last year.

He was elected after pledging to crush the extremist group Boko Haram and crack down on corruption.

The German chancellor said the EU would begin negotiations with Nigeria about a deal to repatriate economic migrants who’re denied asylum in Europe.
