USA: Plane hits eye of Hurricane Matthew

2016-10-07 1

Hurricane Matthew pelted Florida with heavy rains as the deadly storm steamed ever closer to the coast with catastrophic winds of 209 kilometres per hour.

Airlines cancelled more than 3,000 flights and by Thursday night, more than 80,000 homes and businesses were without power.

The crew of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research plane successfully flew through the dense clouds of Hurricane Matthew and into the eye of the storm. Such NOAA flights are used to gather information that allow for better predictions about a hurricane’s path.
