1.Enigma Moths
This beautiful moth was discovered in 2015 on Kangaroo Island in Australia. The species falls under primitive moths which means that it is really, really old. The scientists that found it said that the moths are basically living dinosaurs. The species was found by a team of entomologists led by Dr Niklas Wahlberg from Finland. The discovery of the moth led to not only an entirely new species, but a new genus and family as well. The moths are small, they are about 1 cm long and the wings make it the size of a nickel. They live in the Southern Cypress-pine tree which is a type of tree that dates back to the supercontinent Gondwana. This is the first time since the 1970s that a new family of primitive moths has been discovered. Studying the DNA of the newly discovered moth reveals that the evolution of moths might have been a lot more complicated than we previously thought. Wahlberg also added that Australia has a wealth of undiscovered moths that he would like to research in the future.
