The US has suspended Syria talks with Russia, as the regime backed by the Kremlin intensifies its bombing campaign of rebel-held areas of Aleppo.

Washington accused Moscow of not living up to its commitments to restore the ceasefire deal agreed last month.

“Russia and the Syrian regime have chosen to pursue a military course inconsistent with the cessation of hostilities, demonstrated by intensified attacks against civilian area, targeting of critical infrastructure which as hospitals, preventing humanitarian aid from reaching civilians in need,” US State Department Spokesperson, Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters.

It comes as tensions escalate between the two nations over how to de-escalate the five and half year conflict in Syria.

The United States is trying to shift blame onto Russia by suspending cooperation with Moscow over a ceasefire in Syria, Russian news agencies cited foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.

The UN said it regretted America’s decision and that it will continue to push for a political solution adding it would not abandon the Syrian people to a destiny of endless violent conflict.

On the ground, around a quarter of a million people are trapped in Aleppo. NGOs say that hundreds of people have been killed there in the last week.
